Bio
Born in Ravenna, after humanistic studies (Ravenna, Venice) she moved to Amsterdam during the eighties, working in the archives of ABC Press photo agency while studying photography at De Moor, Stichting for education of film and photography in Amsterdam. Later she moved to Paris (Libèration, Magnum), Milan, working for press agencies and main italian publishers as photographer and photo editor (Mondadori, Rizzoli), and Treviso, where she was invited by Fabrica to work with artist Adam Broomberg on “The fear project”. In 2004 she returned to Ravenna where she studied photography with professor Guido Guidi at the Accademia di Belle Arti; she started an experimental space for contemporary photography called “MyCamera”, curating exhibitions of emerging italian photographers, but not only (currently her studio). She produces images for designers and collaborates with institutions conducting photography labs for kids, while working on personal projects.
Concept
Her focus as an artist centers on a constant research into the photographic medium and the potential possessed by photography to stimulate memory, past and current visions, the link between photography and personal experience. Her work is the result of a very long journey into the photographic language, from commercial photography through paparazzi to the very refined and sophisticated way of great contemporary authors, allowing her to develop a peculiar and quite unique approach, either in curating than in shooting and editing work. Currently busy on long lasting projects that mostly start out by taking pictures out of pure pleasure and inspiration and lately become bodies of work and book projects.
Labs
Curator of photography labs for kids. The labs are conducted in collaboration with schools and centers for family aid belonging to the department of Social Policies. Focusing on a subject, we analyze photography books by relevant authors and discuss them. Later on, kids are asked to take pictures with small cameras or cell phones. Guiding them into editing and comparing each others views, we create postcards and little books, sometimes with the help of a designer, for a further insight into the use of images.
Archive
Dragoni’s archive starts back in the eighties and is made of thousands of photographs, either in color and black and white, analog and digital, prints and files. Subjects are commissioned work and projects she developed through the years.
